You learn and take your test on an automatic – more relaxed, because you can focus fully on the traffic. After a few lessons on a manual car and a short test drive, you may drive any manual car as well.

The best option for most people.
Code 197 has existed since April 2021. Before that, anyone who passed the test on an automatic got a restriction on their licence. Today, at least ten lessons on a manual car and a test drive of at least 15 minutes are enough.
The test drive is done by your instructor – no examiner, no extra appointment at TÜV or DEKRA.
B197 is for you if
- you don’t want to think about clutch and gears while learning
- you still want to drive any rental car lateror the car of family and friends
- you have struggled with changing gears before
- you mostly drive in the citywhere automatic is simply more comfortable

Register
Online or at our school – we plan automatic and manual lessons with you.
Theory
Same as class B: 14 double lessons, Mon, Wed and Thu from 6 pm.
Lessons on automatic
Basics plus the twelve mandatory drives: country road, motorway, night.
Manual lessons
At least ten lessons of 45 minutes on our manual car.
Test drive
At least 15 minutes with your instructor, who confirms it in writing.
Test on automatic
Theory and practical at TÜV or DEKRA – afterwards you may drive both.
The German government is planning a driving licence reform – among other things with fewer mandatory special drives. It has not been passed yet. Until it is, the rules on this page apply. We will update the page as soon as anything changes.

Manual lessons are charged like normal driving lessons. All prices include VAT, as of October 2026. The price list displayed at our school is binding. Fees for the authorities, eye test and first-aid course are extra.

What is the difference to B78?
With B78 you skip the manual lessons and may only drive automatic cars afterwards. B197 costs a few more lessons, but you have no restriction.
Do I need to go to TÜV for the test drive?
No. You do the test drive with your instructor, who gives you a certificate.
Can I combine B197 with driving at 17?
Yes. With BF17 you can also learn on automatic and still be allowed to drive manual.
Can I take the theory test in English?
Yes. The theory test is available in German and twelve other languages, including English, Turkish and Arabic. Our classroom lessons are in German, but our instructors happily answer your questions in English, Turkish or Arabic.
