From abroadConvert your foreign driving licence.
You live in Berlin now and have a driving licence from another country? Depending on where it was issued, you may keep driving with it, need to exchange it, or need tests. We tell you what applies to you – in English, Turkish, Arabic or German.

Three cases.
Which rule applies depends on where your licence was issued. The final decision is made by the LABO, Berlin’s driving licence authority. Just bring your licence – we look at it together with you.
EU or EEA
Your licence remains valid in Germany as long as it is valid. You may exchange it for a German one voluntarily.
Countries with simplified rules
For certain countries (Annex 11 of the German Driving Licence Regulation) you get a German licence without a test or with only one test – depending on country and class.
All other countries
You need a theory test and a practical test. There is no minimum number of driving lessons, though.
Important: a licence from a non-EU country is only valid for six months after you register your residence in Germany. Driving after that without a German licence counts as driving without a licence – a criminal offence. So apply early.
What you usually need.
We fill in the application with you. What exactly the authority wants to see can vary slightly by country – we tell you in advance so you don’t have to go twice.

Good to know.
Do I need mandatory lessons?
No. For a conversion there are no mandatory special drives. For the practical test you need a school car and an instructor, though – that is why it always goes through a driving school.
Which languages is the theory test available in?
German plus twelve more: English, French, Greek, Italian, Croatian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Arabic.
My six months are already over – what now?
Then you may not drive at the moment. Get in touch anyway – we work out with you the fastest way to your German licence.
Can I take the test on an automatic?
Yes. Your licence will then be limited to automatic cars – unless you also take manual lessons as with B197.
