Honestly: B197 is usually better.
Electric cars have no manual gearbox, and automatic is standard in most new combustion cars too. If you are sure you will never drive a manual car, B78 saves you the manual lessons.
If you are unsure, choose B197: it is only a few more lessons, and you will have no restriction later.

The German government is planning a driving licence reform – among other things with fewer mandatory special drives. It has not been passed yet. Until it is, the rules on this page apply. We will update the page as soon as anything changes.

Can I get rid of code 78 later?
Yes, with a practical test on a manual car. Usually it is easier and cheaper to do B197 right away.
Is B78 cheaper than B197?
A little, because there are no manual lessons. Mandatory drives and tests are the same.
