More than just a car.

You choose whether you learn on a manual or an automatic. Automatic is easier, and with B197 you may still drive manual cars afterwards.

The German government is planning a driving licence reform – among other things with fewer mandatory special drives. It has not been passed yet. Until it is, the rules on this page apply. We will update the page as soon as anything changes.

Good to know.
How many driving lessons do I need?
That varies a lot. Apart from the twelve mandatory drives there is no fixed number – what counts is when you drive safely. We give you an honest estimate in the consultation.
Manual or automatic?
Automatic is easier to learn, and with B197 you may still drive manual. Automatic only (B78) makes sense if you are sure you will never want to change gears.
Can I take the theory test in English?
Yes. The theory test is available in German and twelve other languages, including English, Turkish and Arabic. Our classroom lessons are in German, but our instructors happily answer your questions in English, Turkish or Arabic.
How long is a passed theory test valid?
Twelve months. Within that time you need to take the practical test.
What is the probation period?
The first two years with a licence are a probation period. Breaking the rules then can mean a mandatory improvement seminar (ASF).
